Kan samvaro vara någonting att forska om? Vad gör ett kollektiv till ett kollektiv? Är en enad röst möjlig? Hur kan samvaro bli en omhändertagande praktik? Vad kan den gemensamma fantasin egentligen göra?
Hägerstensåsens medborgarhus och Kungl. Konsthögskolan Stockholm presenterar When Things are Alive, en fyradagarsfestival om spekulativa, ekologiska och omhändertagande förhållningssätt kring kollektiva praktiker. Festivalen är ihopsatt och planerad av studenterna på postmasterkursen Collective Practices.

Fyradagarsprogrammet inleds 6 juni med en deltagande stadsvandring som tittar på (o)synliga lager av materia och hybrida ekosystem runt om Hägerstensåsen. Detta följs av en kväll som föreslår olika aktiviteter runt begreppet omsorg. Under onsdagen blir det en spekulativ sammankomst i formen av ett rollspel, ledd av den fiktiva organisationen MIAO (The More-than-human Inclusion and Accessibility Organization / Organisationen för mer än mänsklig inkludering och tillgänglighet)s. Festivalen avslutas under torsdagen med postsocialistiska och postauktoritära synergier i form av poesi och performance. Under hela festivalen visas också vissa av studenternas forskning.

Multispecies Commoning är en deltagande stadsvandring omkring Hägerstensåsens Medborgarhus. Konstnärer, forskare och designers kommer genom att gå och gå fel gemensamt ta in urbana ekologier och ömsesidiga relationer mellan naturens alla olika arter.

Vandringen utgår tematiskt från Folkets hus-rörelsens och Folkets park historia som viktiga platser för meningsskiljaktigheter, vila och allmänninggörande. Genom att på ett medvetet sätt ta in alla liv som omgärdar platsen är förhoppningen att “öppna upp” väggarna på Medborgarhuset. Samtidigt bjuds grannar och nyfikna in för att reflektera kring vilka som egentligen är involverade när beslut fattas om det offentliga rummet.

Med den här kvällen vill vi synliggöra att vi behöver varandra för att lyckas känna den gemenskap, tillhörande och trygghet som jag, du och vi söker i familjen, kollektivet och ravefesten. Vi vill insistera på att samvaron är en politisk handling, men också en pågående förhandling med offentlighet, tro och tillit.

Det här är en inbjudan att få lära från dig och dela hemligheter och frågor om vad som ligger i kärnan av det kollektiva. Kvällen handlar helt enkelt om de vardagliga praktiker som vår samvaro och gemenskaphet är vävd av: ritualer, uppmärksamhet, samtal och berättande.

Hur kan vi göra konst för och med mer-än-människor? Kungl. Konsthögskolan bjuder tillsammans med Statens konstråd in till: Konst för mer-än-människor – en offentlig samling som diskuterar och tänker om våra relationer med mer-än-människor.

I KONST FÖR MER-ÄN-MÄNNISKOR-SAMLINGEN letar vi efter idéer som omplacerar mer-än-människor som aktiva deltagare och aktörer i skapandet och delandet av konst. Djur, spöken, bakterier, plantor och artificiell intelligens är alla närvarande i våra dagliga liv, men ses sällan som jämlika när det kommer till konst. Men om vetenskapen visat att mer-än-människor har intelligens, känslor och socialitet – hur påverkar det vår förståelse av konsten och dess offentligheter? Kan det till och med finnas gemensamma grunder av sinnlighet och delad perception mellan människor och mer-än-människor som möjliggör konstformer som kan göras och uppskattas av alla?

Vår vilja att skapa en gemensam upplevelse under festivalen sattes igång under informella möten påverkade av socker, mörk humor och öl. Vi dansade, sjöng och delade skaviga historier och memes med varandra. På så vis hittade vi sätt att koppla samman våra trauman. Det fungerade på ett magiskt sätt, som spontan fermentering, och resulterade i idéer som kändes märkliga, roliga, befriande och värda att dela med världen. Särskilt med konstvärlden, där vänskap inte alltid blir en synlig del av den kreativa processen.

Monetizing Darkness springer ur erfarenheterna av fem personer från Cuba, Polen, Ryssland och Grekland. Du kanske finner det som en exotisk eller märklig kombination, samtidigt som vi alla är sammankopplade av hotet från imperialism liksom de katastrofala konsekvenserna av senkapitalismen. Vi kommer från fake-demokratier och förtryckande regimer. Vi bär på mytologier och berättelser som förvränger oss i den andras ögon. Det är inte helt komfortabelt.

Under festivalen vill vi experimentera med medier och format som uttrycker det som för oss samman och håller oss isär. Vi vill visa en del av det obärbara mörker som får oss att gapskratta. Vad vad kan du förvänta dig? Olika medier, egna idéer, performativa praktiker, otäcka pickles och kollektiva diskursiva strävanden.

Can being together become an object of research and knowledge? What makes a collective a collective? Is one united voice possible, or can it exist through eclectic synergies? How can being together be a caring practice? What can a collective imagination do? Hägerstensåsens Medborgarhus and The Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, present When Things Are Alive, a four-days festival of speculative, ecological and caring approaches around collective practices conceived by the students of the postmaster course “Collective Practices”.

The four-day program starts with a participatory walk that builds around sensorial responses to (in)visible layers of matter, hybrid ecosystems and species interrelations around Hägerstensåsens (‘Multispecies Commoning’, Monday 6 June, from 2pm – 5pm). The first evening proposes various activities organized around the notions of care : meditation, clay, dancing and bread making, among other activities where thinking practices become material (‘& Other People’, Tuesday 7 June). On Wednesday 8 June, ‘Art for More-Than-Humans Assembly’ is a speculative assembly that takes shape as a Role-Play-Game led by the fictional association More-than-Humans Inclusivity and Accessibility Organization. On Thursday 9 June, the festival ends with ‘Monetiζing Darkness’, post-socialist and post-authoritarian synergies mixed between poetry, performances and social criticism. Parallel to the events, works On display will present some of the student research.

Multispecies Commoning is a participatory walk around Hägerstensåsens Medborgarhus. Artists, researchers, designers, and urban ecologists will collectively walk, jaywalk, and actively participate in sensing and conceiving urban regenerative ecologies and reciprocal interspecies relations through storytelling, transition design practices, place-making, intuition and play.

This walk embarks from the social centre and simultaneously from the rich history of People’s Houses (Folkets Hus) and People’s Parks (Folkets Parker) as spaces for political dissent, rest and commoning. Throughout the walk, site-specific scores and workshops will invite participants to reflect on these hybrid artificial landscapes and how they are shaped and reinforced by intra- and interspecies hierarchies and inequalities.

Guest facilitators will conceive of workshops to activate the senses and rewild the imagination as the walk progresses. By walking and consciously taking note of the lives surrounding the social centre, Multispecies Commoning wishes to ‘open up’ the walls of Medborgarhuset to include more-than-humans and to invite the locals to deeply reflect on who is involved when decisions around public space and commons are taken.

While writing this text to you today, we recall interdependence and reciprocity as the main thread that led us here. And from here, we would like to share an idea: that collective implication is a collective response, in a situated and particular space (here and now). It happens in entanglement with one another, as part of the continuous dynamic of the life we share on this damaged planet.

With this evening we want to acknowledge that we need each other to achieve the sense of community, of belonging and feeling safe that I, you, we seek in a family, a collective or a rave. We want to insist that being collective is a political act, a continuous negotiation with publicness, faith, and trust whose results are often hard to archive and transmit.

Taking a step back and exploring this reality as a place where bodily discourses are created, we decided to let our dynamics intersect, spread and dissolve within Medborgarhuset as a form of collective archiving in movement. It’s an invitation to learn from you, exchange secrets, and question what lies at the core of “collective” – as an engagement toward different presents.

Tonight is about what the everyday practice of being together is made of: rituals and attentiveness, dialogue and storytelling

How to make art for or with the more-than-humans? The Royal Institute of Art in collaboration with the Public Art Agency Sweden organizes: Art for more-than-humans – a public assembly to discuss and rethink our relations with the more-than-humans.

In ART FOR MORE-THAN-HUMANS ASSEMBLY we are looking for ideas that reposition the more-than-humans as active collaborators or essential actors in the process of making and sharing art. Animals, ghosts, bacteria, plants, artificial intelligence… are all part of our daily lives but they are not considered equal to humans when it comes to art. If science identified that the more-than-humans have intelligence, emotions, and sociality, how does this change our understanding of ‘art’ and of its ‘public’? Are there common grounds of the senses and a shared perception of time and space between the humans and the more-than-humans, to share art forms that can be made in collaboration and appreciated by all?

The Assembly is a thinking exercise to imagine a future in which our approach to the more-than-human world has radically shifted. Developed from an initial idea of an open call and structured as a dynamic event with a special dramaturgy and scenography, it gathers individuals and collectives, artists and cultural workers, academics and scientists, the public at large and possibly the more-than-humans themselves. Everyone present at Hägerstensåsens Medborgarhus becomes a part of a formative meeting of a fictional association called MIAO (The More-than-human Inclusion and Accessibility Organization). MIAO seeks art forms and modes of expression that include other-than-human audiences in the public art sphere. We seek to exchange speculative ideas, based on fictional or existing practices of any scale, location or time frame. They will be summarized in a document to be handed over to Statens Konstråd, in hope for it to become a tool for finding future protocols of living in harmony and solidarity with other life forms.

Our desire to craft a collective experience for the “Festival” sparked during informal meetings under the influence of sugar, dark humor and beer. We danced, sang, shared awkward stories and memes and found ways to connect our generational traumas. It worked magic, like spontaneous fermentation, resulting in ideas that felt strange, fun, liberating and worth sharing with the world. Especially the art world, where friendships are not always a visible component of the creative process; yet, we find them vital.

Monetizing Darkness is embedded in life experiences of five folks from Cuba, Poland, Russia and Greece. You might find it an exotic and random combination, yet we’re all connected by realities of menacing threats of imperialism and continuously devastated by the devouring appetites of late capitalism. We come from fake democracies and oppressive regimes. We carry mythologies and stories that distort us in the eyes of the other. It’s uncomfortable.

Those things that bring us together and trigger understanding made us want to create a project that investigates the notion of identity and how the “Non-West” we represent is an unknown and uncharted territory still today. Even the Internet couldn’t help.

During the “Festival”, we want to experiment with mediums and formats that express what brings us together and what tears us apart. We want to show you some of the unbearable darkness that makes us laugh hard. What can you expect? Mixed media, individual ideas, performative practices, nasty pickles and collective discursive endeavors.
