This study circle will center around the reading, discussion, and practice of contemporary poetry. During the spring, we will focus on the sonnet. One of the oldest poetic forms still in widespread use, the sonnet continues to be explored, expanded on, and experimented with by some of the most skilled and innovative poets writing in English. Each session will focus on a single book that makes the sonnet central to its construction, with some shorter supplementary works of poetics on the topic. Some authors included are Ben Lerner, Jericho Brown, Terrance Hayes, Samantha Zighelboim, Jen Bervin, and Marilyn Hacker. There will also be time for a generative writing exercise during each meeting.
This circle is led by the poets Max Alletzhauser and Elizabeth Clark Wessel. This is the circle’s fifth season.
