In this study circle, we’ll reflect and discuss ”Perfect Victims, and the Politics of Appeal” by Mohammed El-Kurd. Published in 2025, in the midst of the genocide in Gaza, it exposes the conscious rhetoric and unconscious language traps when addressing victims of oppression, by their oppressor, the public, as well as by the oppressed themselves. Brilliant and straightforward, this is an essential read for anyone interested in Palestine and colonial studies in general. It is very actionable and should also be used as a tool to develop true allyship with the oppressed.
Together, we’ll go through the book over 6 weeks time (6 meetings). It will be expected to read between 30-60 pages before our meetings, where we’ll reflect and discuss the content read and in this way, deepen our understanding of the main ideas developed in the book. The extent to which we delve into these subjects is heavily dependent on the interest of the participants. Optional learning material such as podcasts, films, texts will be recommended during the study circle, but optional.
The circle is led by Sarah Dahman Hallgren, bookseller and publisher, and is organized in collaboration with The Sumud Bookstore.
