In this study circle, we’ll reflect and discuss Orientalism by Edward Said. Controversial at the time of its publication in 1978, it rapidly became one of the most important books in the fields of middle eastern studies and post-colonial literature. This essential read is relevant today more than ever, and although the ideas developed in it are very digestible, it is not the easiest read. Together, we’ll go through the book over 8 weeks time (6 meetings). It will be expected to read between 30-60 pages before our meetings, where we’ll reflect and discuss the content read, and in this way deepen our understanding of the main ideas developed in the book. The extent to which we delve into these subjects is heavily dependent on the interest of the participants. Optional learning material such as podcasts, films, texts will be recommended during the study circle, but optional.

The circle is led by Sarah Dahman Hallgren, bookseller and publisher, and is organized in collaboration with The Sumud Bookstore.
