This study circle will explore links between psychoanalysis and Islam. How can psychoanalytic concepts contribute to our understanding of Islam? To what extent might Islamic thought inform our understanding of the unconscious? What are the possibilities and challenges of psychoanalytic practice in the Muslim world? These are some of the questions that will guide our inquiry.
 
We will approach these connections from both theoretical and clinical perspectives. However, this study circle is not a training course for individuals wishing to practice psychotherapy.
 
Study materials may include, but are not limited to, relevant chapters from: Salman Akhtar, The Crescent and the Couch: Cross-Currents Between Islam and Psychoanalysis (2008); Fethi Benslama, Psychoanalysis and the Challenge of Islam (2009); Lara Sheehi and Stephen Sheehi, Psychoanalysis Under Occupation: Practicing Resistance in Palestine (2022).
 
No academic or disciplinary credentials are required to participate. Familiarity with psychoanalytic theory is recommended, but not necessary.
 
The circle is led by the poet and the critic Matthew Rana. Reading and discussion will be in English.
