School of Emergencies startades av Hägerstensåsens medborgarhus och kollektivet Chto Delat sommaren 2022. Den interdisciplinära skolan riktar sig till konstnärer, poeter, forskare och aktivister främst från Ryssland och Sverige, som ett svar på kriget i Ukraina och den ökade repressionen i Ryssland. Under flera moduler 2022 och 2023 tar sig deltagarna tillsammans med mentorer och inbjudna gästlärare an krisen i ett bredare sammanhang av ökad nationalism och populism, åtstramningspolitik och klimatkris.

19.00–20.00 Föreläsning av Oxana Timofeeva: Krigsteatern: Katastrof och repetition

Föreläsningen kretsar kring krigsteatern (kriegstheatre) och dess spatiala och temporala strukturer, liksom upprepningens funktion i tider av katastrof. Oxana Timofeeva är professor i filosofi i St. Petersburg, del av Chto Delat (översättning: vad måste göras) och författare till en mängd böcker, senast Solar Politics (2022), en filosofisk essä om solen.

20.00–20.45 Filmvisning med Chto Delat: The Canary Archives (2022, 58 min.)

I mars och februari 2022 gjorde Chto Delat videoverket ”Canary Archive”, som (virtuellt) samlade gruppens alla nio medlemmar. I direkt anslutning till Rysslands krig mot Ukraina så samtalade dom – osammanhängande, alla isolerade, ensamma – om dom själva och deras (mar)drömmar, katastrofen, poesin och hur var och en hamnat där dom var.

Det ryska konstnärskollektivet Chto Delat har i snart 20 år varit en av de viktigaste regimkritiska rösterna inom den ryska samtidskonsten. Oförtröttligt har de granskat makten och på en mängd sätt kommenterat ett allt mer odemokratiskt och korrupt Ryssland. Dom deltar aktivt i att skapa alternativa strukturer för civilsamhället som med ”Skolan för engagerad konst” och ”Rosas kulturhus”.På grund av det politiska våldet har dessa institutioner satts på paus i St Petersburg och omorganiserar sig just nu i exil.

School of Emergencies: Oxana Timofeeva och Chto Delat

The School of Emergencies is pleased to invite you to a lecture with the philosopher Oxana Timofeeva and a screening of Chto Delat’s film Canary Archive (2022). During the evening, soup and refreshments will be served.

The School of Emergencies was started by Hägerstensåsen’s medborgarhus and the collective Chto Delat in the summer of 2022. The School of Emergencies is a transdisciplinary school for artists, writers, researchers, activists and others mainly from Russia and Sweden, responding to the emergency created by the war in Ukraine and growing repression in Russia. The fellows of the school together with mentors and invited teachers will study these issues in the broader context of growing nationalistic tendencies and populism, austerity measures and the ongoing climate crisis.

19.00–20.00 The Theatre of War: Catastrophe and Repetition

The talk will reconsider the concept of the theatre of war (Kriegstheatre) and analyze its specific spatial and temporal structures, such scenarios, scenes, that which is behind the scene, as well as the dialectics of rehearsal and repetition in the context of the idea of catastrophic times.

Oxana Timofeeva is Sc.D professor of philosophy in St. Petersburg, member of the artistic collective Chto Delat (“What is to be done”) and the author of books Solar Politics (Polity 2022) How to Love a Homeland (Kayfa ta 2020), History of Animals (Blomsbury 2018) This is not That (in Russian, Ivan Limbakh Publishing House), Introduction to the Erotic Philosophy of Georg Bataille (In Russian, New Literary Observer, 2009) and other writings.

In February and March 2022, Chto Delat made the video work Canary Arcive, which (virtually) reunited all nine current members of the group. In the days immediately before and after the expansion of the Russian war against Ukraine, they spoke – disconnected, each isolated, lying alone in their private interiors – about themselves, about their (night)dreams, about the catastrophe, about the war, about poetry, about how one got to where one is now.

For nearly 20 years, the Russian collective Chto Delat has been one of the most important critical and poetic voices in Russian contemporary art. Tirelessly, they have scrutinized power and through different mediums commented on an increasingly undemocratic and repressive Russian power in broader context of deteriorating international politics.

They actively participate in building alternative structures of civic society such as School of Engaged Art and Rosa House of Culture. At the moment due to direct police violence this institutions stop operating inside Saint Petersburg and reorganize itself in exile.
