Contemporary Poetry IV

This study circle will center around the reading, discussion, and practice of contemporary poetry. In this fall iteration, we will have a special focus on the formal possibilities of the chapbook. Also known as a pamphlet or booklet of poetry, the chapbook has a radical history as an experimental, small-scale publishing format in which many poets started out, and to which many habitually return.

In each session of this study circle, we will discuss one chapbook each by two notable poets plus a piece of poetics. Some authors included are Ocean Vuong, Mark Strand, Bernadette Mayer, Joyelle McSweeney & Johannes Göransson, Joshua Jennifer Espinoza, Shahd Alnaami, Hilary Plum, Brian Teare, Mónica de la Torre, Mahogany L. Browne, and Garrett Caples.

We will explore the handmade, the contingent, the political and polemical, the ‘quintessence of the minor’, poetry as a project, and much else – and we will end each session with a creative writing exercise related to the work discussed.

This circle is led by the poets Max Alletzhauser and Elizabeth Clark Wessel and is facilitated in collaboration with ABF.
